People today pay more and more attention to health problems. Along with the rapiddevelopment of computer technology, virtual reality system combined with modernmedicine produced virtual surgery system.Suture as an essential part of the virtualsurgery, gradually become a hot and difficult problems in virtual surgery system. In thispaper, we simulate the skin and suture based on physical models, and focus on ourresearches on the interaction of suture and soft tissue during the suture process.Firstly, in order to simulate the deformation of the skin in real time, we selectmass-spring model as the physical model for skin. Meanwhile, we introduce an internalfriction coefficient to performance the relative motion between two masses of soft tissuerealistically. To enhance the realism of the skin model, we design texture arrangement sothat each quadrilateral can map texture mapping unit respectively. We improve thetraditional method of looking for point of action to reduce the computing time.Secondly, we simulate the suture based on mass-spring model. In order to reflect thethree-dimensional scene of the suture,we draw cylinders the same number of segmentsof the suture and redraw the cylinders according to the new location of the suture.Computing the new position of the whole suture by follow the leader algorithm givesgood performance in suture’s rigidity characteristics. To avoid the distortion caused bylarge deformation, we use follow the leader algorithm to compute the new configurationof the suture.Thirdly, we carried out a stress analysis to make the interaction of suture and softtissue close to physical reality. Considering the interaction of the two deformable objectsin a continuous pattern suture, for each node of the soft tissue model, we store the nodethat attached to it. This information allows us to compute the soft tissue deformationwell.Finally, in order to verify the improved suturing procedure simulation algorithms, the VC++language and Open Graphics Library are used to design the suturing proceduresimulation system on Windows platform.
