The origin-destination (OD) matrix is an important input in the Advanced TrafficInformation System (ATIS) and Advanced Traffic Management System (ATMS), as well asthe basic data in the highway network planning and intelligent transportation control.Therefore, obtaining and updating technique of the OD matrices is one of the key contents inthe ITS. Considering the shortcoming of traditional roadside interview survey and thegradually application of video surveillance technology in highway network, a novel regionalOD survey method is proposed through using vehicle license plate recognition technique. Inthe process of this method, ArcGIS platform is firstly used to construct regional road networkand the regional vehicle trajectory is estimated through matching the license plate with thedetected sample data in time series according to license plate recognizing approach. Thenparameters and unreasonable derived data are processed by the pro nearest neighborclustering and GA. Ultimately the OD matrix database could be constructed.Based on the priori OD matrices by vehicle license plate recognition, the OD matricesupdating model and algorithms are constructed. Firstly, the content of OD matrices updatingis divided into three categories, namely, updates based on the natural growth trend, localhighway network changes and land property change. Then, the updating model and solvingmethod every type are constructed based on analysis on the affection relation of OD matricesupdating. At last, the results are reversely checked by path flow information of the vehiclelicense plate recognition. A case example is carried out using the2010Zhejiang provinceregional road OD survey database, which shows that the proposed method has betterperformance, such as lower sampling expansion rate and easy application, while the ODupdate model is feasible and effectively practicable. So the proposed OD matrices acquisitionand updating methods can be extended to the application of regional highway network surveyacross our country.
