Serial devices are easy to implement and maintain and is of good transmission performance, so they are widely used in industrial control devices field. As the rapid development of the network technology and the embedded technology, in some cases, we need to connect the serial devices to the network. Consequently, we need to seek a solution to solve the interconnection problems between serial devices and network.This thesis proposed a design of serial and network switching system which achieved the transparent transmission of data between the serial port and the network. The switching system, which converses and transmits the communication data between the data link and RS-232serial link, judges the data frames coming from network and converts them into serial data then sends them to the serial device; The data stream from serial devices are processed and formatted so that they can be transmitted on the network.In view of the actual demand of industrial control device and on the basis of the s3c2410hardware platform and the Linux environment, this article puts forward an overall design for the serial port-network converter, so as to achieve the data transformation between the RS-232link and the network interface. In our application program, two modules are designed:the data communication and the parameters configuration. In the data communication module, we achieve the transparent transmission between two serial ports and network ports in the data link layer. In the program design, semaphore synchronization mechanism is used, so that the system realizes the real-time communication. Through the CGI program designing, in the parameters configuration module, Boa server is transplanted and dynamic pages are created. The users could input the WEB server’s IP in the address bar through the browser, for the management of the converter and the remote system parameters configuration.The system’s functions tests are given in the end. In this paper, we design the converter with low cost and low power consumption, which can satisfy the application of the industrial control device as well as the needs of users.
