Wireless-Optical Broadband Access Network (WOBAN) has been considered as a promising choice of broadband access technologies in the future. WOBAN integrates the wired access technology represented by EPON and the wireless access technology represented by WLAN. Hence, WOBAN holds the benefits of high bandwidth capacity and the flexibility of network access. And it can support high-speed fiber transmissions, mobility of works and the entertainments for network users, which meets the personalized requirements of users. Wireless access node which belongs to the terminal equipment of WOBAN system can provide users with variety of network services, such as wired or wireless internet services, VOIP and IPTV. Therefore, it is significant to design the wireless access node for the user layer of WOBAN. In the paper, works in the dissertation can be summarized as follows:Firstly, the ARM and FPGA based designing scheme for the hardware structure of wireless access node is proposed, by means of the analysis of business and technical requirements. The structure mainly includes a main control processor S3C2440, an auxiliary control processor FPGA, an optical transceiver unit, an Ethernet transceiver unit, a wireless transceiver unit, a VOIP unit, a power supply unit and other external expansion equipments.Secondly, appropriate components and devices have been selected after repeatedly investigations and comparisons. Based on the introduction of the pin functions for core chip, the function and corresponding circuit reassignment for all the components of wireless access node are investigated.Thirdly, a novel MAC protocol which is suitable for wireless access of WOBAN system is proposed, which includes MAC control frames, OAM management frames and MAC data frames. Finally, a simple test-bed is built, which combines three systems such as ARM-Linux, PC-Windows, PC-Linux. The processes such as encapsulating, sending, receiving and unpacking of MAC data frame have been achieved.
