Nowadays, there are various kinds of lasers, and the fiber laser with rare earth element have a very prompt development. Fiber laser is displacing the traditional laser by degrees. We introduced the structure, classification, merit and demerit of fiber laser, and the development of the fiber laser as well, especially study of the Yb3+doped double-clad quasi-continuous wave fiber laser.There is a demonstration for a LD pumped double-clad Yb3+doped quasi-continuous wave fiber laser system in this paper, adopted a976nm LD laser as pumped sourcing. Assembled a laser power which had repetition frequency below1000Hz, pulse width between10μs to50ms adjustable and duty ratio under50%in pulse mode. Adopted a diode laser with966nm and25W peak power as a pumping source and11m Yb3+doped fiber, after test, the highest power is2.67W at pulse width10ms and rep-frequency50Hz without any thermo-optical problems, slope efficiency26%and the optical-to-optical conversion efficiency of laser output is29.3%. This paper also demonstrated the phenomenon of the experiment, indicated the relationship between overshoot-rising edge and output power and analyzed the performance of the quasi-continuous wave fiber laser.
