With the development of technologies of information collection, data fusion and wireless communication, wireless sensor networks (WSN) are widely used in military, industrial and many other fields. Time synchronization is one of the key technologies for WSN, and many controls such as data fusion and node collaborative sleep are based on it. Compared with the traditional fixed packet networks, there are special restrictions on energy consumption for WSN, so study WSN time synchronization from energy efficiency has been one of the research hotspot.Firstly, this thesis discusses the characteristics, architecture and energy management methods of WSN, and then analyzes the technology needs of time synchronization for WSN, reviews and compares some synchronization algorithms of WSN, describes applications of PTP protocol in WSN. Based on the CSMA/CA communication mechanism of IEEE802.11, this thesis designs an energy-efficient time synchronization protocol (EPTP) referring to the PTP synchronization mechanism, presents the composition and control processes of the synchronization system, and makes a preliminary theoretical analysis on the energy conservation performance of EPTP.To verify the energy efficiency of the EPTP scheme, this thesis builds a simulation model bases on the OMNeT++platform, makes simulations of the PTP and EPTP, and compares their energy consumption. It is shown by simulations that EPTP can extend about20%, comparing with PTP, lifespan for the master node and save about76%energy consumption for the slaves, in the condition no service traffic loaded.
