Enhanced Data Rate for GSM Evolution (EDGE) technology can both improve the data service bitrate compared with traditional GPRS, and little changing to the existing wireless networks, which makes EDGE one major technology in nowadays wireless internet. The network optimization technology in EDGE is the current research focus. This thesis presents a comprehensive study on EDGE network optimization technology and its applications with theoretical analysis and project implementations.Firstly, this thesis gives a brief introduction of principles and major technologies in EDGE including EDGE Codec techniques, ARQ mechanisms, resource allocation and hardware issues, etc. Then two kinds of optimization methods, i.e. resource related and wireless environment related are analyzed. Some important optimization strategies are proposed such as GPU/PCU traffic load balancing, GAter interface resource, EDGE upstream power control and frequece hopping setting, respectively. The theoretical analysis results have been implemented into actual projects and performance improvement achived.
