Established in1926, the Young Companion was the firstcomprehensive news pictorial in the history of Chinese press andpublication. As its chief way of expression, the abundant photographsin the Young Companion covered all areas of the society and life. Andthe image narrative adopted by the Young Companion not only hadthe general characteristics in the phase of the first visual culturetransition, but also was influenced by the local culture.This dissertationfocuses on images and studied the Young Companion’s uniquecharacteristic of narrative. The analysis will focus on two aspects: therelationship between images and texts, and the meaning of juxtaposingdifferent images. The former emphasizes which is primary and which issecondary of images and texts in narrative, as well as their effects, tryingto clarify different functions of images and texts in the development ofimage narrative. And the latter analyzes the relationship betweengroup of images and single image, and the relationship among singleimages in a group, as well as their effects in narrative.In addition to theform of image narrative, this dissertation also analyzes the YoungCompanion’s features of narrative from the aspect of contents,including comparison of ancient and modern ones, and thegeographical differences of the city space. The historical backgroundof the Young Companion was characterized in the transition of visualculture from text to image and the collision of industrial civilization andancient civilization. Particularly, the latter resulted in the inheritance andreform of ancient Chinese literature of the Young Companion.Therefore the Young Companion and its image narrative are with thecharacteristics of historical data and typicality, and can be used forreference in the development of modern visual culture and the study ofimages in the ancient Chinese literature.
