Along with the development of the instant messaging and the spread of mobile internet services, it makes increasing requirements of network and user for instant messaging, the base of instant messaging system has been changing from network to mobile network, the user considers that the instant messaging system is an indispensable to the daily communication, As a result, the user needs to communicate by instant messaging system on mobile phone or tablet computer and wireless terminals. The big advantage of Android platform which can improve technology innovation and reduce cost is openness. It has been a hot spot on developing Android apps. This paper analyzes mobile phone operating system and instant messaging software. Furthermore it designs an instant messaging system on Android.In this paper, first of all, a systematic study of the background on the current mobile operating systems is introduced. Then the states of mobile operating system, instant messaging software and instant messaging protocol’s development are simply described. Furthermore, the characteristics, architecture, composition and working mechanism of Android are analyzed in detail. It adopt the management methods of software engineering, analyze the project requirement of each module of client to analyze, design, introduce key technologies of the application, establish a scalable model of conversation, design instant messaging system of Android platform with XMPP protocol.In conclusion, this paper gives a design scheme of instant messaging system which using C/S architecture with open source XMPP protocol on Android operating system. The design provides theory basis for the realization of the relevant application in the future.
