Wireless sensor network is a new kind of network that attracts attention from allsides, and it has been an active research area in the past few years, which can be appliedin a broad range of applications. Wireless sensor networks are presumed to be deployedusing battery-powered stationary sensor nodes with limited resource, The energy issuehas become the bottleneck in the development of wireless sensor network. MACprotocol plays an important part role in saving energy of sensor networks. And it is notonly responsible for dealing with the problem of the wireless channel competition anddata conflicts, but also controls the working of the RF front-end. In recent years moreand more researches focus on wireless sensor network MAC protocol.Wireless sensor network MAC protocols are deeply researched and AREA-MACprotocol which is a proposed asynchronous MAC protocol is improved to overcomesome shortage in this thesis. Fixed short sleep is replaced by an adjustable short sleep, and a control frame PTS is introduced to solve the problems of exposed terminal andhidden terminal.Simulation results show that, compared with original AREA-MAC protocol, thismodified protocol can save energy by around7%and increase throughput by8%inhigh network load, energy can be saved by6%.To verify the validity of this modifiedAREA-MAC protocol, the AREA-MAC protocol and modified AREA-MAC protocolis implemented in msstatePAN stack, and network testing and energy testing areimplemented based on the testing system composed of CC2430and other software andhardware. Network load can be controlled by adjusting the sending interval betweendata packets, and three different modes are enabled in testing: high load, medium loadand low load. Comparing to the conventional AREA-MAC protocol, the test resultsshows that this modified AREA-MAC protocol can save energy by5%in high loadand low load, and the power-consumption is almost the same in medium load, whichaccords with the simulation result.
