To date, many users prefer utilizing wireless network to access to the Internet dueto the development of computer network technology and network technology withuncomplicated, flexible and geographically unrestricted characters, the technicalsupports of larger WLAN transmission bandwidth, as well as the increasing stability ofInternet Communication. However, WLAN has its restrictions and these restrictionshave attracted the attention of hackers on WLAN penetration. For example, comparedwith the wired network, the wireless network is wireless and its standard coding andmodulation process is completely open. Therefore, the wireless network is easier to beattacked even an unskilled hacker can simply stole a lot of confidential user informationwithout being noticed. Moreover, the type of wireless network hacking is growing as thefact that it not only suffers from the traditional cyber attacks, but also the specificWLAN attacks, such as making fake wireless access point, wireless eavesdropping etc.In this paper, we firstly provide an overview of the WLAN development. Secondly,we introduce the existing penetration testing toolsrvices/softwares and the securityauditing tool, srvices/softwares for analyzing WLAN, as well as their advantages anddisadvantages. An observation has been conducted to analyze the common WLANattacks which include building fake AP attacks, service denial attacks, data monitoringattacks, communication hijacking, wireless password cracking, and code injectionattacks etc. The implementation principles of previous attacks have been analyzed fromthe link layer and network layer point view. A code injection attack test, has beenconducted in our experimental environment. We also provide various defenceapproaches for different attacks. In order to solve the problems of existing WLAN, we proposed a novel linux-basedmonitoring system. Secendly, we describe the basic functions of the system, includingwireless search, wireless monitoring, cryptanalysis, communications agent, data analysisetc. Then, we introduce the system infrastructure which contains three layers:presentation layer, data layer and service layer. For each layer, the required functionalmodules and the relationship among them have been designed. Finally, detailed workflows of each functional module have been explained and the main modules of thesystem have been implemented. The WLAN is becoming more and more important, since it is changing the waypeople live. In order to improve the MAC layer safety of the wireless network, anorganization undertaken by the IEEE group has been build, which make us believe thatthe safety of the wireless network in the near future, will reach a new level.
