As electronic technologies develop, the electronic systems are driven in the direction offaster digital speed, on-chip clock speed of GPU and CPU are expected to GHz, power supplydecrease, all these trends imply that the demands of lower power drop, higher frequency ofSSN isolation, smaller scales and so on. All these problems are part of PI (Power Integrity). The decoupling capacitors is one of typical ways to reduce PDN noise, however, thedecoupling capacitors will become inductive and ineffective in reducing the PDN noise abovethe self-resonance frequency. Recently a new way to reduce PDN noise is usingelectromagnetic bandgap structures to reduce the propagation. Though electromagneticbandgap (EBG) power plane for printed circuit board (PCB) is valid, it has large patch sizeand ignores the voltage drop. In this paper, a disc–shaped branch tree is designed based onconstructal theory for optimal direct current (DC) performance; it has multi-functions of lowvoltage drop, equidistribution, compactness and noise isolation. This paper is organized asfollows.Fist of all, the background of PI is introduced. The differences and relationship among PI,SI and EMC are described. The recent research is presented. Then the basic theories of PI andEBG are introduced. Secondly, how to construct the disc-shaped tree is described in detail. The impacts of structural parameters on the resistance are given, and the optimal parametersare obtained. Compared with conventional types of H-shaped constructal structure,disc-shaped constructal structure has lower nondimensionalizing resistance. At last, a novelpower plane based on disc-shaped constructal tree is proposed, and an improved version isalso proposed. The study shows that these power planes have multi-functions of low voltagedrop, equidistribution, compactness and noise isolation.
