Permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) has many advantages, such as smallsize, light weight, high efficiency etc. Speed control system composed of PMSM is widelyused in national defense, aviation, industrial and agricultural production. PID controller has asimple structure and strong robustness. PID controller is used in speed control system. Due tothe variety of motor types, the applications and performance requirements, it is difficult totune the parameters of the PID controller. The research of tuning methods of PID controller’sparameters of PMSM speed control system can reduce the debug time and improveproduction efficiency,and the intelligence level of the motor drive.PMSM is a nonlinear, strongly coupled and multi-variable object. The control strategy ofvector control based on rotor flux lets us equivalent the PMSM to a DC motor, that greatlyreduces the difficulty of the design of control system. The whole tuning divided into threesteps, based on the DC motor model in the coordinate system. First of all, obtaining theparameters of the PMSM through the experimental. Secondly, designing through the currentcontroller parameters and the speed controller parameters combining with the relationshipbetween the automatic control principle of typical system’s parameters and dynamic and staticperformance, based on the reduction and approximation of the control systemstructure. Finally, designing off-line PI parameter fuzzy-tuning controller for auto-tuning ofspeed controller parameters.The hardware and sofeware of motor drive which is developed by our laboratoryindependently are introduced at the end of this paper. The DSP program of the tuning processand the parameter tuning function of the drive monitoring software are introduced as well.The experimental results show that the static and dynamic performance of the the speedcontrol system is improved greatly when the controller parameters are tuned using the abovemethod. The tuning method is proved feasible. The rapid setting of the PMSM speed controlsystem’s controller parameters enhance the adaptability of the motor drive and can be usedwhen the motor is newly installed or the load changes.
