Since1997, the proportion of China’s aging population over the age of65of the total population has reached more than7percent, so China has entered the aging society. From the beginning21st century, China’s aging population has been growing rapidly, and the level of China’s aging population has increased. As a central province, the economy and society of Anhui is not developed, but it has entered into the aging society. In the background of the aging society taking Xin’an Evening News and Hefei Evening News for example, this paper explores the representation metropolis’newspapers make of images of the aged. It also explores the relations between the representation metropolis’newspapers make of images of the aged and social groups’understanding of the aged. Then it studies how to represent positive images of the aged in order to serve the aging society and make contributions to the harmonious aging society.The paper is composed of five parts, part one of which discusses the background in which the author researches the representation media make of images of the aged, including the aging society and the research of images of the aged.Part two explores analysis methods metropolis’newspapers use to represent images of the aged, and analyzes the features of the two metropolis’newspapers’representation of images of the aged. It is found out that the two metropolis’newspapers have many common characteristics when representing the impression of stereotypes, including stable reports of the aged, preference for the male, more positive aspects with lots of negative ones about images of the aged, fewer representations of the aged in rural areas, more representations of private life, and frequent minor roles or helped ones. Part three expounds on the causes for the representation of the impression of stereotypes on the basis of analysis metropolis’newspapers do of the representation of the aged. It mainly discusses the following four aspects, the first of which is low rate of the representation of the aged due to their disadvantage to express opinions, the second is the relations between the unbalance of the representation of the aged of each gender and female’s disadvantage to express opinions, the third is that low purchasing capability leads to fewer and more negative representations of the aged in rural areas compared with urban areas, the four is relations between more representations of positive images of the aged and political propagandas.Part four explores whether the representations media make of the aged affect audience’understanding of the aged. It is found out through questionnaires that the representations media make of the aged are not completely the same with social groups’understanding of the aged. There appear more positive images of the aged in media while social groups especially the aged look at images of the aged in media mainly negatively. The audience have no strong cognitions of helped images of the aged in media such as metropolis’newspaper.As the end of this paper part five is inclined to analyze what metropolis’ newspapers can do to represent images of the aged and serve the aging society...
