The footprints on the crime scene are important clues for solving criminal cases, and are also the main evidence of the prosecution. Better use of footprints information can narrow the scope of investigation and improve the detection efficiency. Existing footprint inspecting system can’t meet the demands of criminal detection which are often recurrent, series and fled, and footprint information sharing of different areas becomes an inevitable trend. Online image processing, recognition and matching system using computer and network technology can not only realize the efficient extraction, mass storage, data synchronization of the scene footprints, but also provide the image information sharing and a fast and accurate matching query.In this paper, based on the actual needs of the public security departments, we develop the footprint image processing system. The system is based on the browser/server mode and uses the Silverlight rich-client technology. It is developed on the.NET development platform and using the object-oriented C#language to achieve the extraction process of footprint images from the original data collection to the pattern characteristic image. Using the reasonable soles pattern classification method can provide a basis for the follow-up identify work between the scene footprints and library. This paper describes the design and implementation of the main functions of the online footprint image processing system, including:footprint image acquisition; footprint image inputting which contains image preprocessing, feature extraction and pattern drawing; size calibration and measurement of footprint images and other processing functions before storing the footprint images. The system also supports multiple text manipulation and provides a platform of pattern characteristics measurement and matching for similar footprints, and supports for overlapping functions.The footprint image processing system outlined in this paper is the basis of footprint images processing, recognition and matching. It changes the original mode of operation, and greatly improves the quality of cases combination and rate of identification of the site footprint, which can effectively solve the detection problem of series cases. The system which is developed base on the browser model is easy to deploy and maintain, and convenient for the using of the local public security departments and will play an important role in investigating the cases.
