The surface plasma polaritons optical waveguide broke through the diffraction limit of the traditional optical waveguide. It’s the dawning of optical device miniaturization and high density integration has brought for people. The surface plasma polarization wave is a transmission electromagnetic wave between the interface of metal and medium. The surface plasma polarization wave has good locality, the characteristics of the surface plasma are used to make new nanometer optical device. The research background, the research status and the application of the surface plasma of the detailed describes in this paper. The development history and the principle of surface plasma polarization wave were elaborated. Through the field distribution and the waveguide dispersion relations, we know that light waves can not directly inspire surface plasma polarization wave, so further research that the way of the excitation of the surface plasma polarization. The four parameters (The mode effective index, propagation length, field distributions, lateral field confinement and figures of merit of fundamental mode) and corresponding research method were studied in the surface plasma polarization optical waveguide.Based on the traditional dielectric-loaded surface plasmon polariton waveguides, two new structures were proposed-bimetallic layer dielectric-loaded surface plasmon polariton waveguides and semi-elliptical dielectric-loaded surface plasmon polariton waveguides. By compared and analyzed with traditional dielectric-loaded surface plasmon polariton waveguides, the four important parameters of the new structures were studied by using Comsol modeling or similar software base on the finite element method. In industrial fabrication, dielectric-loaded surface plasmon polariton waveguides (DLSPPWs) were fabricated by using the large-scale UV lithography. However, it is very difficult to fabricate the ideal rectangular dielectric ridge of DLSPPWs in practical fabrication processing, the dielectric ridge must be processing error. In this paper, four commonly nonideal constructs were investigated. The relative parameters of the fundamental mode were analyzed at the telecom wavelengths, including the mode effective index, the propagation length, the field distributions, the effects of the geometric deviation, such as the sharp-angled circle radius R, he lateral ellipse radius R’,the regular trapezoid lateral deviation a and the inverted trapezoid lateral deviation b, the lateral field confinement and the figures of merit. The results are valuable for the parameter selection in the real processing.
