In the 21 century, Optical network as the major component of transmission network is developing rapidly. In recent years, with the rise of a large number of new businesses as well as the reduction in communication charges, making the profitability of the major carriers continued to decline. Network design and optimization to reduce network costs as a starting point, the software simulation as the main means, to improve profits as the purpose, become the issues of concerned in the country and abroad. Green design is an important part of optical network design. It is under the new business needs, give reasonable network traffic-building programs and a routing policy design method.This paper summarizes the green design methods, and the key technologies in green design. Under the project "Transmission network design research and design software development ",this paper do in-depth in the following areas:1. Describes the background and significance of network design and optimization of the research and the software of network design.2. Describes the role of the green design in the network design and describes three models and process of the green design. Focuses on the whole green design and rolling green design, and examples demonstrate design steps.3. Detailed research the key technologies in green design including survivability and branches deleted4. Describes the software under the project "Transmission network design research and design software development ", including the basic functions and the implementations.
