The dam may have some disadvantageous changes during operation, there have been a number of accident records of the dam in both home and abroad, which has brought the serious disaster and the huge economic loss to the related country, so the dam safety monitoring has very important significance. In order to meet the high demands of dam safety monitoring, the development of more accurate and reliable instruments for dam safety monitoring becomes the development trend. The CCD technology is usesd for development of dam deformation intelligent monitoring instruments, conducting the following research:(1) Deformation monitoring equipments are the essential main front-end monitoring equipments in system of dam safety monitoring,this paper compares each kind of distortion monitor instrument, from whose principle of work to the practical application effect, finding that the CCD photoelectric instruments have high precision, good long-term stability and anti-jamming capability which meet the actual demand of different projects. Through consulting the relevant power industry standards, the detailed request and the specific target are set for the design of dam distortion monitor instruments.(2)This paper describes the analysis methods of deformation monitoring, highlights the displacement detection principle of deformation, and gives overall design mentality of dam deformation monitoring equipments. Intelligent measuring instruments are designed including Wire Alignment Transducer,Two Dimensions Coordinometer and Hydrostatic Leveling Transducer.(3)According to demand analysis and performance indicators of dam deformation intelligent monitoring instruments, the paper explains the mechanical structure and optical system in detail, gives the overall design of instrument hardware block diagram, and analyzes the instrument’s power supplying module, CCD driving module, controlling module, Communication module ,display module and so on .(4)According to the instrument functions, the software design of the lower computer is achieved, which focuses on the CCD driving software, system controlling programs, data acquisition and processing methods and the implementation process of communications between the host computer and the lower computer. The basic error testing, high and low temperature testing and stability testing to the dam deformation intelligent monitoring instruments are carried on, test results show that the instruments have higher measuring accuracy, complying with the relevant industry standards, the instruments are lowcost, small, intelligentized and networked .
