In recent years, China, which is in the transformation period, has experienced numerous changes. Therefore, the social problem in China cannot be avoided. The financial crisis of The Wall Street did not only bring huge economic disaster to the USA, but also induct extreme impact to China. The ultimate aim of the mainstream media is focusing and recording the developing and forming history of society. As the mirror and annunciator, the media has significant influence in solving the problem of the society. Since the work and unemployment problems are important aspects in social problems, it should be highly valued by mainstream media. This thesis chose People’s Daily and The New York Times as its research objects, and analyzed the work and unemployment problems. By comparing the amounts, edition pages, pictures, titles and resources etc. in quantity, we found that the mainstream media in China and the USA have both paid great attentions to work and unemployment problems, whereas made some unbalanced reports in international news. Besides these two similarities, we have discovered more different points between the two newspapers, such as in the expressing forms, main contents, analysis depth and reports values. Chapter1and2are background of our research. These two chapters introduce the relationship between social problem and work and unemployment problems, and the situation about the relative reports in China and the USA. Chapter3is the format comparison about the reports of work and unemployment problems between the mainstream medias in China and the USA. Chapter4is the content comparison about the above point. Chapter5summarizes the same and different points of the relative reports in China and the USA, and provides the reasons analyzed by us. Chapter6is the last chapter which gives summaries of the thesis. Because there are many differences in politics, economics and cultures between China and the USA, the mainstream medias in these two nations exhibit great differences. As one important field, reports of work and unemployment problems could reflect much information about the reports of social problems. Through comparing these two newspapers, studying and utilizing the references and advantages of the New York Times, we hope to afford some help in the reports of work and unemployment problems in China, which is also the main goal of this thesis.
