With the rapidly growing of network usage, people can enjoy a broader and convenient way of communication, however, new problems appear. According to [2], the ICT (Information and Communication Technology) sector alone is responsible for a percentage which varies widely between 2% and 10% of the worldwide energy consumption. In view of the rising energy costs, people’s awareness of the impact on ecological environment caused by operation networks and equipments is gradually increasing. The energy monitoring and management of network equipments is becoming a research hotspot.In order to better investigate energy saving potential and finally develop energy saving policies, the essential and urgent problem is how to monitor energy status of the network devices and get the precise energy consumption information. It enables people to understand the overall real time energy consumption condition of running network and the energy fluctuations of each device based on the different configuration and workload, and thus people can grasp a comprehensive and definite power usage status of the network. However, the network devices of different manufacturers vary widely, there is not unified energy consumption monitoring of all kinds of network equipments. Our research focuses on this problem, tracking the latest development of IETF energy management standards, analyzing and concluding the energy management requirements, energy management framework and reference model, and the information model of energy management. Based on these work, we extend energy monitoring MIB by adding new energy aware managed objects, and design a unified energy monitoring architecture by using SNMP. Additionally, with the help of energy management theory, we design and implement the energy monitoring system using SNMP, making a uniform fine-grained monitoring of the network-level energy consumption of network devices is possible. For energy consumption monitoring system, this thesis mainly describes the design and implementation of the management station. There are four modules in the management station, including the MIB data gathering module, which is responsible to communicate with the agent using SNMP; the data storage and handling module; the energy estimating module, etc. Usually, it’s not so easy to obtain detailed energy consumption data of network devices, so an energy estimation module is designed in the management station to reduce device complexity. In addition, the management station asynchronously communicates with multiple agents to improve system performance and processing speed. In order to better present energy consumption data, a graphical display interface is provided for users to observe the changes of various energy parameters.Verified by experimental operation of the implemented system, our proposed methods can give people a statistical overview of the real time power usage status and total energy consumption of network devices, investigate power saving potential and evaluate the effectiveness of energy saving policies.
