Digital Meter has been widely used in industry and control area, due to itsadvantage in high precision and easy using. However, record data by people is stillnecessary during some application environment, such as Meter Detectiong,Measurement and Control, Science Experiment, Ammeter Recording, Water MeterRecording. When reading manually with naked eyes, it may produce subjective errorsdue to massive scale carved in meter. Meanwhile, efficiency is much lower whenreading manually. With the development of machine vision, image processing andcharacter recognize, auto reading technology for meter has become a commercialproduct. Recently, the auto reading research is focused on analog meter and digitalmeter. However, there are few research papers on double-scalde meter. This kind ofmeter has played an important role in measurement area. When reading manually withnaked eyes, it may produce subjective errors due to its massive scale. To avoid sucherrors and achieve the goal of high precision real-time on line automatic reading, ameasurement system combining machine vision and industrial camera has been made.This paper designed a set of solutions across image acquisition to automaticreading based on dial feature and machine vision combined with various automaticreading method in and abroad. The whole system includes light source, image collectformation instrument, display system, image processing system for automatic reading.In the subject, we finished the putting up of light source and video acquisition platform.To weaken the strong direct reflection of meter surface as well as to inhance scaleinformation carved in different hight, this paper utilize LED diffuse refelection source.In order to carry out high speed real-time image processing, we adopt a high speed scalelocate and character recognize algorithm. We completely finished video acquire andreading result display real-time on the the Visual C++software platform.Automatic reading system designed in the paper is founded image processingtechnology and realized on the the Visual C++software platform. Experiments provethe system owns the property of good stability, rapidly, versatility. Our design supplies areference model for strong direct reflection research and is utility for intelligent readingfor double-scaled meter.
