Toexplore thealgorithm of dim targetsdetection in complex background is helpful for thebattle now and latter. And it is beneficial for the further development of precision guidedmunitions. This paper mainly research the detection of dim targets in the images withcomplexbackground.Infrared sensor is easily affected by atmosphere hot radiation, long distance and sensornoise, the detected targets in infrared images often present like dim targets and drowned innoise. The basic problem inherent to extent the detection range is the detection of small,lowobservable, moving targets in images and complex background. In order to improve the SNRof images and suppress the background clutter, in this paper, we have analyzed thecharactering of small target, noise and background clutter. After that, we recommend somepreprocessing algorithms and compare the effect of them. Each way has its own advantageanddisadvantage,you can choose theright oneby theactualscene andthe expectation.In addition, wavelettransform has been successfullyused in the detection of singularitysignals recently,including edge detection. The algorithm of edge detection based on wavelettransform is usually more excellent than the traditional ones. But its fault is its neglect of theimage directivity. Hereby the algorithm of edge detection based on direction wavelet isstudied in this paper. But the width of edge line is too thick. In order to avoid thisdisadvantagewe present a new schemeon the estimate criteria of edge point and on the fusionof the result in several directions. We use the improved algorithm to the detection of smalltargets. The theory analysis and experiment results both show that the algorithm of targetsdetection based on direction wavelet transform have good performance in accuracy, noiseimmunityandreal-time.
