The effective detection for small targets in low SNR images has becoming a hot research field these years. Hitherto, many kinds of algorithms have been put forward to resolve this problem. However, the computation load is too heavy to meet the practical engineering. According to the statistic characteristics of IR background clutter, an improved spatial matched filter(SMF)is presented. Theory analysis and computer simulation show the improved SMF can extract small target from IR background effectively. After that, a kind of threshold partition method is used to transform the gray images to black-white images in order to provide a better condition for the image sequences detection. This paper studies the detection of moving small targets in image sequences based on the adaptive filtering technology. According to the moving characteristics of small targets in IR image sequences, a judging method based on neighborhood is discussed and used Emulation results show this method can distinguish small target from sequences effectively. Furthermore, it has lower computation requirements and uses fewer images for detection as well.
