With the continuous development of wireless sensor technology, its application field, which isbecoming increasingly widespread, especially in environmental monitoring, has a significant practicalapplication prospect. However, limited by its own network scale and mode, the communicationdistance of a wireless sensor network is often within a few kilometers around. Concentrated on thecases of environmental monitoring, in most of these cases the distance between monitoringdepartment and monitoring area is always far. So it requires the combination of WSN and othertechnologies in order to achieve the transmitting of regional monitoring data over a long distance.M2M, the abbreviation of machine-to-machine communication, mainly uses remotecommunication technology such as GPRS. Docking the WSN with M2M platform can realize thelong-distance expansion of WSN. That is, connecting the WSN network with M2M platform throughan M2M gateway to implement the remote acquisition and calls of the regional environmentalmonitoring data.This paper has designed and implemented an environmental monitoring system based on WSNand M2M technologies. Then discussed several technical problems while implementing the remotemonitoring with the combination of WSN and M2M technology. The system platform totally includesa sensor node system, an M2M gateway system and a data-call system. The major work had beendone was:(1)In this system, the hardware platform of environmental monitoring node was designed withCC2530chip. This kind of node hardware could collect a variety of environmental data andtransmitted the data at2.4GHz radio frequency. On the hardware platform, we have implemented themigration and improvement of the TinyOS operation system, completed the MAC protocols of alow-power wireless sensor networks named CSMA+LPL and routing protocols of MESH network,and achieved a perfect power management and power control of a node.(2)An M2M gateway of WSN had been implemented, which adopted the ARM9embeddedprocessor S3C2440on hardware; CC2530as the sink node to collect WSN data; and EM310GPRSmodule as the export of network data. The Linux OS had been migrated to the gateway platform, andimplemented the docking of M2M platform server by WMMP protocol.(3)Choosing an area at Shanghai Zhangjiang to holistic test and use the system in there realenvironment, a WEB-based environmental monitoring system platform had been completelyimplemented. After above half a year of operation, the system platform achieved a stable and reliable performance with all function indexes meeting the design requirements.
