Combining the wireless local area network and mobile Ad hoc network advantages, with a flexible structure, self-organization, multi-hop and other characteristics,WirelessMesh Network(WMN) is a kind of high rate, high capacity of new multipoint tomultipoint wireless broadband network providing high reliability, stability and coverage, satisfying users to obtain high quality of wireless broadband services whenever andwherever possible, becoming an important component of the next generation Internet, called radio version of the Internet, with a widespread application prospect. As a keytechnology in network, routing technology plays an important role for networkperformance, determines whether the network operates normally. The routingtechnology of WMN need to be studied and solved in many aspects, so to design themost conducive network routing algorithm to improve the performance according to itscharacteristics has important significance. At the same time, as a recent research focuscross-layer design has been a new direction. The paper ’s main work is to study therouting technology of WMN, and to design a kind of multicast routing algorithm basedon predicted transmission delay. The paper firstly introduced the development history, structure, differences fromtraditional wireless network, characteristics, applications and key technologies of WMN;secondly elaborated several existing typical unicast routing protocol and multicastrouting protocols, main research topics and cross-layer design basis;and then analyzedpresent common routing criterions. On this basis, in light of its defects, based on theIEEE802.11protocol a new MAC model was established, packet transmission rate andother parameters were extracted from the path, so the transmission delay time of pathswas to be predicted as routing metric in route selection, and then to select a leasttransmission delay time path, to achieve the purpose of cross-layer design, and hadprovided a very good plan for the multicast routing. In the multicast routing algorithm,by predicting the delay time using the above algorithm the least delay time path fromthe source node to the destination node could be obtained, through paths combining, amulticast routing tree with low transmission delay, and high throughput rate wasobtained at last;finally the network simulation and the simulation software OPNET wasintroduced briefly, and the new algorithm were simulated through OPNET.The simulation results showed that, under the same conditions, improved routing algorithm could enhance performance in aspects of end-to-end transmission delay timeand throughput of the multicast tree node of WMN, proving the superiority of the newalgorithm. This is because the improved algorithm uses predicted delay timetransmission as routing criterion to get the least delay time path, avoiding interferencebetween nodes at the same time.
