With the explosively growing desire of higher quality video, the technology ofvideo coding has developed rapidly during recent decades. Based on this fact, theestablishments of a series of video coding standards were proved to be very importantfor the industrialization of the audio and video products. The H.264/AVC standard,established in2003, is the newest video coding standard until now, but people will notsatisfy with that. High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC), as the next generation ofvideo coding standard, is being compiled by the researchers all over the world underthe leadership of the experts group of JCT-VC. This paper will introduce a series ofresearch works and technical proposals on intra prediction and high efficiency entropycoding technologies in the daily changing HEVC.The intra prediction technology in HEVC is based on directional prediction. Thisso called Angular Intra Prediction has defined33different predictive directions whichcan obtain predictive values in the accuracy of1/32pixel. In addition with a DC mode,using the average value of reference pixels as predictive value, there are34intramodes at all. Regarding of the spatial correlation, a most-probable mode derived fromthe modes of neighboring blocks is used in HEVC. With the deep research on that, anew multi-candidates most-probable modes intra prediction method is proposed inthis paper, which can improve the coding efficiency with no addition of codingcomplexity or reduction of coded video quality.CABAC, which is used for high efficiency entropy coding, takes a moreimportant role between the two entropy coding tools in HEVC. There are three mainsteps of CABAC, including binarization, context modeling and binary arithmeticcoding. In this paper, the step of context modeling is focused. With the detailed studyon the coding process of several syntax elements, such as split flag, skip flag andtransformed coefficients, a lot of works on context simplification or contextoptimization will be illustrated in this paper, which will benefit from both the thrift ofcoding resources and the improvement on coding efficiency.Besides, a summarized description of HEVC will be showed in this paper, whichis the start point of all the research works.
