The stereoscopic technology of imaging, compression, and display is the focus in domestic and foreign research.Compared with viewing 2D images, the stereoscopic images can provide space depth information of scene,a more immersive experience, and have a bright future in applications, such as science, military, education, industry, medical, entertainment and so on.Yet,the viewers will feel visual uncomfort if they watch the stereoscopic images for a long time. The visual feeling and physiological health are directly related to the visual comfort of the stereoscopic image content. Currently, there is no uniform criteria to judge the visual comfort, therefore,it has a great significance to study three dimensional image content factors.Firstly, the research background and the current domestic and foreign status of the stereoscopic image visual comfort factors are summarized in the first chapter. Secondly, the characters of human visual system and the stereoscopic imaging technology are introduced in detail.Thirdly, the subjective evalution ctiteria is analyzed deeply and on this basis two characteristic parameters, brightness and chrominance, are extracted and a new mothed of step-by-step approximation was proposed in this paper. Then, through a large number of rigorous subjective test, the comfortable brightness/chrominance matching and difference maps are got by step-by-step approximation. Finally, the universal applicability of both maps is verified according to 100 stereoscopic images. The accurate rate of wheather one stereoscopic image is comfortable was more than 90%.The Experimental results show that the new method of step-by-step approximation can not only reflect the stereoscopic image comfort better, but also greatly reduce the workload of the subjective experiment compared with the mothod of limits, and provide a base for the subjective and objective assessment of binocular image pairs.
