With the sustained and rapid development of Internet, the demand for network bandwidth is increasing. The traditional access network using cable as a transmission medium has not been able to respond to this challenge. Optical access network, especially PON, with huge bandwidth has been widespread concerned, Since all users share the bandwidth, EPON, GPON which based on TDM/TDMA technology is unable to meet the growing demand for network bandwidth. With huge bandwidth, low OPEX, transparent with upper layer protocol, simple network upgrade and many other advantages, WDM-PON is considered to be one of the best next-generation access network solutions. However, the lack of low-cost light source for WDM-PON has posed a major obstacle for its wide application. Because of its simple structure and stable performance, Spectrum-sliced ASE injection-locked FP-LD becomes a research focus. This paper reviews the development of the access network technology and introduces WDM-PON technology status and key issues faced. A variety of WDM-PON light solutions are introduced and analyzed. Through theoretical analysis and experiment, the research focuses on the operating characteristics of spectrum-sliced ASE injection-locked FP-LD and the AWG impact on the source design and system performance. Finally, a spectrum-sliced ASE injection-locked FP-LD WPON light source is designed and tested. Besides, some preliminary ideas on the Hybrid TDM-WDM employed this source is proposed.
