This paper, describing the historical background of Chinese Education inIndonesia and focusing on the development of mandarin education after the slowrecovery of small cities, selects a typical port district-Lampung Province asrepresentative and conducts an investigation into the current situation of the localmandarin primary and secondary school teachers. The investigation covers9aspects:mandarin teachers’ gender, age and nationality; workload, income and occupationloyalty; teaching language and media, teaching difficulty and the use of moderntechnology.With this detailed investigation, serious problems existing among themandarin teachers are found out, including: teacher shortage, serious aging phenomena,income and social status to be improved; tutors appearing in large numbers and holdingup the professionalization of mandarin teachers, pronunciation and grammar as the mainteaching difficulties, limited use of modern educational technology.Based on the aboveinvestigation and analyses, this paper further studies the countermeasures to the currentsituation of primary and secondary school mandarin teachers, which is the true value ofthis paper. Six aspects concerning the countermeasures are involved: encouragingChinese universities to participate in Indonesian local mandarin teacher training andcultivation; enhancing the cultivation of Non-Chinese mandarin teachers in Indonesia;strengthening economic and trade cooperation between the two countries to draw moreattention to the mandarin teachers; strengthening the cooperation between Chinese andIndonesian universities and promoting the professional development of mandarinteachers; enriching the contents of mandarin teacher trainings and carrying them out tothe point; strengthening modern educational technology training.Investigation andanalyses in this paper not only help to further understand the current status and existingproblems of the Indonesian mandarin teachers, but also help to solve the problems, andto some extent, provide a valuable reference for mandarin teachers and relevantgovernmental and non-governmental institutions at present on their future work, studyand the long-term development of mandarin education.
