With the full implementation of the new curriculum in English of the senior high school,traditional English teaching mode in the high school has become increasingly unsuited to theneeds of quality education reform. New Curriculum Standard for English teaching points outthat the task of English curriculum basic education is to stimulate the interest of students andto help the students build confidence, develop good study habits, form effective learningstrategies and develop their ability of autonomous learning. Therefore, the stress of Englishteaching in senior high schools should be laid on cultivating students’ autonomous learningability in English. As a consequence, it has been one of the main missions of teaching reformto satisfy the demands of quality education reform through elaborating students’ subjectivity,inspiring and arousing the enthusiasm of students’ learning, developing students’independence, exploration and cooperative learning, causing students’ learning substantivechanges. However, the phenomenon is still seen everywhere that teachers are alwaysindoctrinating the students who lack active learning motivation and initiative in presentEnglish reading teaching. At present, although learning plans are popular in ShandongProvince and other provinces all over the country, we find out that there exist some problems.Some teachers are accustomed to the old teaching mode while teaching through learning plans,holding the idea that it wastes too much time to allow students to explore, discuss,communicate and bring forward problems. They mistake learning plans for collection ofexercises; even they just copy what is in the textbook, aggravating the burden of studentsinstead of elaborating the advantages of learning plans. Therefore, to explore how to devise anEnglish learning plan which can meet the needs of students in senior high school proceedingfrom the practical point of view of the students becomes an urgent requirement.In order to really overcome the disadvantages of examination-oriented education and toteach students to learn, the school, Tengzhou No.1Middle School, which the author works inbegan to cultivate students’ autonomous learning ability through teaching with learning plansbased on quantities of teaching theories and emerging teaching modes. Teaching with learningplans is aimed at cultivating students’ creative ability in the way of instructing students tolearn and explore autonomously. In view of this, on the basis of questionnaires, the authorpresents a study of teaching reading with learning plans upon senior one students in onesemester with the purpose of exploring the effectiveness and practicability of adoptinglearning plans in senior English teaching to cultivate students’ autonomous learning ability and how to design an appropriate learning to satisfy the need of the students according to thequestionnaires answered by the students.The purpose of this study is to guide students in the teaching of reading so as to fosterstudents’ autonomous learning ability based on autonomous learning theory, constructivelearning theory and reading comprehension strategies by analyzing the features of the learningplan teaching mode,the principles of learning plans, the principle of the implementationprocess, as well as the effectiveness of the mode. Through a semester of teaching, the authorconducted two questionnaires, interview and reading comprehension tests on senior onestudents(122students) from two classes who were taught by the author, adopting learningplans in teaching. The author is aimed at testifying the effectiveness of learning plans and howto design an appropriate learning to satisfy the need of the students according to thequestionnaires answered by the students. After a semester of application, it can be seenwithout difficulty that the effect is distinct. The use of the Learning Plan for teaching readingtruly does better in cultivating students’ autonomous ability, strengthens learners’ ability ofautonomous thinking and improves their capability in English.
