With the transformation of language education, the traditional teaching mode in class is challenged. Great passion has been put on the student-centered teaching idea and autonomous learning concept. Autonomous learning, which is not only an effective form of learning, but also the ultimate goal of teaching, has become a main topic in the study of education. Since the nineteen sixties the concept of autonomous learning has been proposed, and it is mainly advocated as the learner centered teaching method, whose purpose is to focus on students’ future survival and development. To train students’ autonomy, students are considered as the main body in the teaching and learning activities, which accords with the requirements of the New Curriculum Reform in our country. The New Curriculum Reform actively encourages us to cultivate students’ autonomous learning consciousness and ability. However, because of the long-term influence of the traditional teaching mode, which takes teachers and textbooks as the center, students in our country rely on teachers substantially. Students’ enthusiasm of independent learning is not high, from which we can see the present situation is still hard.Following the great development and rapid progress of society, English reading has become a must in our life and work gradually. English reading is one of the most important language skills in English learning. Therefore, it has a prominent position in English learning. It is the most important way for students to accumulate knowledge, access to and organize information. However, many disadvantages of the traditional reading teaching mode exist, which no longer adapt to the development and need of EQO(Essencial-Qualities-Oriented) education. The attention on students’autonomy and initiative in reading has not been paid currently. Thus, in order to make students have a strong ability of independent reading so as to achieve the creative reading, teachers should cultivate and develop students’ reading consciousness, and then enable students to get a good reading habit.The New Curriculum Reform puts forward special requirements on autonomous learning ability. Thus, the training of effectively applying the autonomous learning strategies in English reading is in accordance with the need of the New Curriculum Reform. At the same time, in the process of English learning English reading ability is one of the important goals of learning. The author of this thesis review the situation of senior high school students’application of the autonomous learning strategies in English reading, which aims to investigate the majority of teachers’ and students’ current understanding, mastering and using of autonomous learning, as well as the influencing factors for students to apply the autonomous learning strategies in English reading. It has been put into four parts as reading motivation, plan before reading, monitoring while reading and evaluation after reading. Through the collection and analysis of the data in the survey, the conclusions have been drawn as following:1. Most of the students have clear motivation and goal before reading.2. Students’ ability of applying the autonomous learning strategies in English reading is low, such as lacking sufficient activities to make plan before reading, being poor at monitoring while reading and less evaluation after reading.3. Teachers have less knowledge about autonomous learning and they still focus on the traditional teaching model.Through the research, both students and teachers are able to be aware of their strengths and weaknesses in application of autonomous learning strategies into English reading. For students they can find right ways to solve the problems and become a life-long reader and learner to meet the need of society. Autonomous learning will guide us to foster a lifelong capacity that needed by the world. For teachers, they will pay attention to the differences between their current teaching ways and future needed ways. Then cultivation of studetns’ innovative spirit and practical ability will be focused on and advocated. Students’ autonomous learning and training have become the important factors to improve the quality of teaching in the new situation.
