After years of development, the student affairs administration in the university is becoming an important and indispensable work in the higher education system. The goal of the student affairs administration in American university is to create a good campus environment to achieve their educational goals. The staff of student affairs administration as managers, their primary responsibility is to enroll students and guide students’ learning and life. Through the analysis of a variety of professional research and employment situation, help students choose their favorite major and planning for the future career goals. In order to improve the administrative level of Chinese student affairs, it is necessary to learn the advanced management ideas and successful experiences of the American college student affairs. This thesis consists of five parts:The first part introduces the concept of "student affairs" and "student affairs administration".Part two is the characteristics of the American student affairs administration. This section first describes the history of the development of the American student affairs administration, which includes the following four periods:the ground period, the infancy period, the formation of the period and its period of development. Then it describes the ideas of student affairs administration of American universities, which embodied in the following six aspects, that is, the integrity of the development of the quality of students; the nature of student affairs administration; the social nature of the ideological and moral education; the legalization of the management methods; the specialization of the management mode, and the professionalism of the management team.The third part concerns the differences of the student affairs administration between Chinese and American universities. This section first introduces the development of China’s college students work briefly. Then it explains the differences of the student affairs administration between Chinese and American universities, which lie in the following three aspects:the core values, several different aspects of the performance standards and the norms of Student Affairs Administration. The reasons leading to differences in management ideas of China and the United States student affairs mainly includes the different status and roles of the Student Affairs; the different understanding of the functions of the Centre of the student work; the different understanding of external relations of cooperation and the different understanding on the resources of the work of student affairs.Part four mainly focuses on the problems of the current Chinese college student affairs administration. The research on Chinese college student affairs administration started really late, but it also has made some achievements, such as student-oriented administrative ideas, began to explore the mode of practice for student services, and actively explore the integration of the student affairs administration and the ideological and political education. In contrast, we found that the student affairs administration in Chinese University have many problems, such as the management ideas of student affairs is not scientific, the responsibilities of Student Affairs Administration are not clear enough, and so on.Part five presents the inspirations that American college student affairs administration gave us. We want to learn the concept of administration of U.S. colleges and universities, and put it into practice. In the work of student affairs administration in our country, first of all, we need to actively promote the development of the concept of university student affairs administration, then to do the following four aspects, that is, always prominent core education to develop students’ international perspective; always keep up with student needs, and promote the academic progress; always adhere to service-oriented idea for the growth and success; always do respecting, understanding, and creating equal and opening environment. Secondly, we must establish the student-oriented concept. In order to realize that object, we need to do some efforts to safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of students; to do some efforts to help them achieve the goal of self-management; to help them have confidence; to help them shape the mature personality and establish a safety awareness. Third, we need to improve the administrative system of student affairs’, which we must first clear is the scope of responsibilities of student affairs administration, then followed by standardize the operational procedures of the student affairs administration. The fourth, we must implement the student-oriented mode. For example, we can encourage students to participate in school management. And we should understand and respect for the diversity development of students, besides, we can help them enhance the legal awareness and sense of democracy of student work. The fifth, we should strengthen the building of student affairs team in order to promote the professional building of the college counselors. Besides,it is necessary to improve communication and coordination mechanism for student affairs administration. After these efforts, I believe that the work of China’s college students will be much better.
