With the continuous expanding of migrant children population group, the problems of them havedrawn more and more attention. Researches about migrant children are also more and more than before. But most of the existing researches are theoretical analysis, and the only several experience research alluse quantitative method; this is not useful for us to know better about the situation of social exclusion tomigrant children. In order to make up to the shortages of researches before, research problem of thisstudy is to explore what’s the migrant children’s explanation to social exclusion they faced? We usequalitative research method, collect data through semi-structured interviews from nine students fromthree different migrant schools in Beijing to examine how they feel about social exclusion, what effectsocial exclusion has on them, and how they explain and respond to it. Through analysis, we find thefollowing:Firstly, the intensity of students’ feelings toward social exclusion is different, depending on thetype of exclusion. Their feelings toward cultural and institutional exclusion are very strong, but when itcomes to economic exclusion, they don’t feel as strongly. Secondly, the effects of social exclusion onmigrant children are not solely negative–for some students, their effects are positive. Thirdly, migrantchildren tend to attribute social exclusion to their own lifestyles, economic status and low educationlevel, and do not realize the institutional role in social exclusion. Finally, migrant children have differentcoping strategies to social exclusion. They mainly include testifying, negotiating, accommodating, andwithdrawing.Based on these findings, this paper proposes strategies for migrant children to make better sense ofsocial exclusion and to cope with their effects effectively. Specifically include: increase theunderstanding of migrant children to urban people and urban life; increase the resilience of migrantchildren; increase their understanding to social exclusion and support and help them to cope with socialexclusion.
