Sport climbing is a challenging and adventurous sport, the excitement and thrill in which one obtains in the sport elicit one’s own potentials and makes one challenges one’s own limits. The sport helps raising an individual’s braveness and determination when facing obstacles, which help to build the participant’s confidence and sense of responsibility.The objects of this study include government representatives, representatives from climbing unions, teachers and students from school teams, community sports organizations, athletes and coaches. Through literature review, interviews and questionnaires, the history, current status and the issues present in the process of development of sport climbing in Hong Kong are described and analyzed, based on which strategies for development of the sport is proposed.From the investigation of the current status of the sport in Hong Kong, it is known that:1) there are a total of130affiliate clubs in Hong Kong recently,80%of them are offering sport climbing training course.2) Up till early December of2011, there are141coaches certified by HKMU. There are88,50and3of level one, level two and level three coaches respectively.3) In2011,15elite athletes and20youth athletes have participated in competitions taken place in China; but both the quality and quantity of athletes vary, and the training standard is not stable.4) Lack of training locations and facilities,From investigation of specialists:issues which Hong Kong sport climbing is facing include:1) the lack of support of the sport from the government,2) the insufficient coordination between education and training of the sport,3) promotion of the sport is not thorough in schools and the lack of resources for development of the sport at schools,4) weak structure of athlete team and that some athletes retire before their succeeding athletes are ready to take their places,5) the imbalanced structure of the coach team,6) the lack of related scientific studies and data. Strategies for future development of sport climbing in Hong Kong:1) the government should have a comprehensive, all-round and scientific understanding of the problems faced by different sports when drafting policies for sports development;2) the Education Bureau should provide support and value to all athlete,3) since sport climbing is made eligible to be included in the2020Olympics, the government should promote the sport and construct more and modernized training spots for sustaining the of the sport,4) while increasing the amount of potential athlete, a full set of development plan for elite and youth athletes should be set up so need not worry their livelihood after their retirement from the team,5) to improve the imbalanced structure of the coach team, coaches must increase their own quality and learn more about the scientific training method,6) The Hong Kong Sports Institute should take reference of the experience of other countries in developing scientific study of Sport Climbing,7) to do well information work, publish the something about Sport Climbing reference book.
