National defense knowledge teaching in colleges and universities aims to enable students to master basic military theories and skills, foster awareness of national defense, strengthen patriotism and collectivism, stress on the constituent discipline, improve overall quality, and provide qualified reserve soldiers and officers for the PLA. However, during the teaching process in colleges and universities, there exist many problems which have severely affected the effectiveness of national defense knowledge teaching."National Defense Education Act" clearly states that national defense education adheres to public participation, long-term adherence and emphasis on the effectiveness."Emphasis on the effectiveness" here refers to the emphasis on the effect of education, which is the goal of every educational activity. Based on the investigations in10colleges and universities in Hunan Province, this thesis provides the definition of the effectiveness of education in military theory, summarizes the teaching problems resulting from the dilution of national defense awareness, value deviation and inadequate protection mechanisms, analyzes the main reasons for the weakening of effectiveness and tries to offer some effective suggestions to improve the situation, hoping to make full use of national defense knowledge teaching to create a stable social environment for China’s economic construction.
