Chinese language reading has already appeared as a means ofteaching. Reading–aloud teaching was originally applied in theChinese language learning, which is a kind of teaching mode forimproving learners language ability. As the scope of the application tothe international exchange continuously extending, English teachinghas gradually become an important part in the national educationsystem. Therefore, as English is the major subject of language learning,the methods of teaching reading–aloud should be widely applied inour English teaching. For the children, the motivation and interest ofEnglish learning are the key factors to improve learning. But thetraditional language teaching methods often make children regard thelanguage learning as dull as ditch water, then gradually lose the interestin it. Their motive is passing the examination. Consequently richeningreading contents and applying teaching methods flexibly can arousechildren’s strong interests in the process of learning English. At the sametime, it can conduct the children to adjust their motivation of learningEnglish in the process.But still there are many problems existing in teaching English readingin the primary schools in China, such as underdeveloped activities,monotonous plans of teaching methods, the unbalance of thereading-aloud activities. Also the students lack understanding, interestsand confidence. According to this situation, this paper firstly putsforward the four principles of teaching English reading in primaryschools. They are ‘The principle of student-oriented’,‘The principle ofTeacher-Student interaction and cooperation’,‘The principle ofscientific activities’ and ‘The principle of developing the integrity ofstudents’ abilities’. Then, under the direction of English teachingstandard and reformation of development, and based on the existing situation of English teaching in reading for primary school students, theauthor explores an effective way and does the case study on themethod and means of teaching reading to improve students Englishlevel. By the practical research and comparison, the author finds thatthe interest in reading-aloud has improved, and the level of oral Englishhas been advanced somewhat. And the confidence of reading hasincreased, in the meantime, the anxiety in reading classroom hasdropped. Finally, it draws three conclusions from this paper. They are‘Communication should cover the whole process of teachingreading-aloud’,‘The setting of reading-aloud course provides moreopportunities of practicing English reading-aloud for students’,’ Thevariety of reading activities can stimulate students interest in learninghow to read aloud’.
