Basic Education Reform Compendium (Trial) is drawn up to provide guidelines foreducators to address the present basic education situation, in which receptive learning,mechanical memorizing and automatic training are unduly emphasized. It advocates students’active participation, willing exploration in the course of learning and intends to enhance students’abilities to acquire new knowledge, to analyze and solve problems as well as to communicateand cooperate with others in the process. This new learning style, beneficial and innovative at thesame time, has become the top concern for educators in their research and practice.Concept map, a learning strategy of considerable significance, has been proved byresearchers from both home and abroad to be an effective way for students to learn to learn.Prevalent in the foreign land, especially in European countries, Canada and the US, it is one ofthe most commonly adopted teaching and learning strategy and has yielded considerable results.Now as one of the major education reform strategies, concept map has also attracted specialattention from Chinese scholars, especially under the background of the basic education reformcompendium. Concept map has become a fundamental trend though, its application andaccommodation to teaching in the Chinese land to formulate a practical strategy remains aproblem. This thesis proposes to delve into the“application of concept map to junior highbiology teaching,”in the hope that practical research strategies in the application of concept mapcould be found and certain feasible strategies in the reform of junior high school biologyteaching could be provided.This thesis begins with the introduction of the concept map theory, which includes itsdefinition, characteristics, classification, function as well as working process. It traces theresearch into the concept map both home and abroad and explores the theoretical reasons for itspossible application to teaching practice. This thesis also analyzes the practical application of theconcept map to junior high biology teaching and proves its effects in teaching by experiments.The research focus of the thesis is on the application of the concept map to junior highbiology teaching at different stages of learning, from teaching, reviewing to exercise practice.Specific examples are adopted to analyze the practical process of the application of the conceptmap in teaching and review classes, to assess its effect. The research finds that the strategy ofconcept map can help improve students’studies. Questionnaires are then carried out to furtherprove that students’learning styles are fundamentally altered with the help of concept map. Theybecome more willing and cooperative and their interests in study and abilities in innovation andreflection are also greatly enhanced.
