Rural education is an important part of our entire national education system,covering more than half of China’s population. The healthy development of it relates toimprove the quality of people and the success or failure of the socialist modernizationstrategy. It is also an important factor affecting our international competitiveness.However, there are some problems in the development of rural education, especially thepositioning on the value orientation of rural education. The educational value orientationrestricts the goals and direction of development of rural education, affect all aspects ofeducation. Now, China is a society in transition. With the rapid development ofurbanization, urban orientation began to flood in the society, and penetrate to the field ofeducation. The city in a dominant position has a greater right to speak in the educationsystem, while the rural marginalized, leading to urban orientation become the dominantvalue orientation in the development of rural education. Under the auspices of theorientation, the Rural Education becomes the poor reproduction of urban education, andlooses the characteristics of rural education. This is no doubt that it brings a variety ofproblems and puzzles in the development of rural education. Where rural educationshould go has become the hot issue of education academics. Although scholars do agreat deal of exploration and study, but still fail to reach a consistent view.On the basis of the historical context of combing rural education that isurban-oriented, the study analyzes and interprets urban orientation comprehensively,discusses the various conflicts and contradictions brought to the rural, criticizes varioushazards caused by urban orientation of rural education. In the premise of its reflection, atthe same time combined with development characteristics of today’s era and thedevelopment trend of education, it proposes a "people-oriented" on the rural educationalvalue orientation, and views developing a comprehensive, harmonious student as thestarting point and fundamental footing of rural education. as a social practice activity to train people, education should put people at the center of the educational valueorientation. Only on the basis of "people-oriented", can rural education be based on therural reality, meet the developing needs of rural society, cultivate harmoniousdevelopment of men, and advance a new socialist countryside construction.The main structure of the study is divided into five parts: The first part is anintroduction to the reason and significance of the research topics, the status anddevelopment trend of domestic and international research, previous studies of theshortcomings and problems to be solved, research’s ideas and methods and research’sinnovation and difficult. The second part discusses the Centennial Review of the valueorientation of rural education in China, discoursed respectively from the late QingDynasty, Republic of China, the founding of the Republic of New China to the CulturalRevolution and reform and opening up. On the basis of the discourse, the study has aprofound reflection in the century’s development of rural education, and insights into theorientation of the city always existed in the process of modernization of the ruraleducation. In the third part, the research analyzes and interprets the urbanization of ruraleducation in detail, including the performance of the urbanization of rural education andthe reasons for the formation. Part IV discusses the crisis of rural education under thedominant position of the urban orientation, including the conflict of the urbanization ofrural education and rural society and its hazards on the development of rural education.The fifth part raises the point that“people-oriented" is necessary aspirations of ruraleducation development, and discusses the social background of the "people-oriented",the connotation and the main content of the "people-oriented", and thinking about theimplementation of "people-oriented" value-oriented.
