Ethnography is a systematic account of different cultures resulting from the fieldwork by the anthropologist, which is supposed to be rigorous, objective and devoid of empathy. However, Translated Woman, as an anthropological work, was written, instead, in the form of life story as intended, and strengthened by using shadow biography, straying far beyond the traditional way of ethnographic writing as it displays a strong sense of empathy. This thesis attempts to analyze the various factors of empathy against the broad background of Writing Culture in anthropology and the special hybrid identity of the woman writer, in order to explore the influence of hybridized writing style and the displaying of the anthropologist to anthropological writing authenticity, thereby the conclusions are educed:The theory of empathy reflected in the anthropological works Translated Woman was based on the general background of Writing Culture in anthropology in the context of postmodernism, as well as the special hybrid and feminine identity of the author. As a tentative writing practice, rather than impairing the authenticity of the work both as a life story and ethnography, the work in question retrieves the narrative authority through blurring the boundary of the anthropologist and his subject, which is a more compiex understanding of the text authenticity and a more dialectic description of the complex relationship between the biographer and his subject, the anthropologist and his subject. The objectivity and rigorousness are thus realized exactly in this form.
