The college students are not only the object of higher education, but also the power to promote social progress and national development directly. The training of high-quality and innovative talents in line with times and social needs is the responsibility and mission of colleges, but also the focus and guidance of college students affairs work. After the reform and opening up, higher education in China has transformed from elite education to mass education gradually. The advances in science and technology, deepening of market economy, progress of social transformation and the reform of political system, the people continue to receive the baptism of traditional and modern ideas and so on, which make the macro environment of higher education undergo the great change. The dramatically increasing of students number in college, the character of individual students by times, the ideas and institutional changes in higher education and other factors also contribute to the micro environment of higher education. Which provide the opportunities for students affairs work and make it face the pressure and challenge. This paper focuses on the paradigm shift of college students affairs work in 21st century, mainly divided into three parts:the first is the introduction of the conception of paradigm invented by Thomas Samuel Kuhn, the description of college students affairs work paradigm and its definition. This part make a historical research on the conception and theory of paradigm, then provide the concept of college students affairs work paradigm and give a clear definition, divide the development of college students affairs work into three periods by reviewing its history and progress:the period of pre-paradigm; the period of construction of paradigm; the period of paradigm shifting. The second part mainly demonstrate the necessity of paradigm shift by analyzing the challenges and shortcomings of existing paradigm. Based on the analysis of external and internal environment change of paradigm, then point out that the present paradigm has affected the goal of talents training and coordinated development of higher education, lagged behind the development of knowledge economy and the college students affairs work, restricted the endogenous changes in demand of college students affairs work paradigm. The last part explores the paradigm shifting, also the purpose of this paper. From such aspects as ideas and objectives, organization and team work, work culture, the paper discuss the feasibility and tendency of paradigm shifting. The realization of paradigm shifting and the construction of new paradigm promote the holistic and systematic shift of college students affairs work and provide the inspiration for the practice and theory of college students affairs work.
