The gender imbalance that will take place in China beginning in the year 2020 will have measurable effects on several sectors of the country’s economy. This paper argues that the disproportionate ratios between males and females in China will be such that approximately 24 million men in China will be unable to marry a Chinese woman. Money otherwise spent on a girlfriend, wife and/or family thus becomes disposable income for them, and consequently will shift this group’s consumption habits such that they will use portions of this income to purchase an increased amount of goods from several industries where men are already consuming more than females. The rationale behind this:●Future demographics in China suggest that approximately 24 million Chinese men will be unable to marry a Chinese woman;●The tobacco, alcohol and energy industries in China are experiencing growth, and are also sectors where men traditionally consume more than women;●These 24 million Chinese men, regardless of socioeconomic, family and educational backgrounds, will have an increased amount of disposable income that would have otherwise gone to taking care of and/or providing for a female significant other;●Based on industry forecasts through 2020, the tobacco industry will see more than 600,000 additional cigarette carton purchases, beer consumption will increase by about 1.1 million tons, and an extra 8,000 tons of standard coal equivalent of energy will be used as a result of these men consuming more from these sectors of China’s economy.
