Eco-environment plays essential role in the life quality and propagation of human being. It is imperative to foster next-generation capable of reconciling the human activities with the sustainable development of environments. To accomplish this arduous task, we should translate and integrate seamlessly the environmental-friendly advanced and applicable biotechnology, especially microbe-based biotechnology into high school agenda. Therefore, our high school was taken as a specimen to find the environmental awareness and skill background of high school students. The results showed that the awareness and skill is rather poor, although they are enthusiastic concerning the urgent environmental challenges. They are rather passive. Both the students and teachers need new training and practical routine to refresh their skills.Since phenol is the major pollutants in high school campus wastewater. We sought to find some microbes that can degrade phenol. A bacterium was found that can tolerate phenol at maximum 1000mg/L. This strain is Gram negative, short rod, and is Cedecea neteri identified by 16SrRNA. To our knowledge, this is the first report that this human pathogen was isolated from soil and phenol degradable. Physiological and biochemical identification, fatty acid composition and genome sequence of this strain were determined. We further this new strain into our high school students pilot wastewater treatment. The results show this is very practical and effective. The participants of this pilot experiment further took part in a series of competition and were credited with administrations of various levels. They benefited profoundly from this new integrated program on the environmental awareness, skill. And most important, their confidence and innovation awareness were significantly boosted.
