An ageing population fosters tremendous challenges in many parts of the world, including in the world’s most populous country-China. At the same time, it also nurtures tremendous business opportunities. Using the case of Shanghai, the aim is to investigate existing business models in the field of elderly care, and provide analytical insights of the status quo. Both natural and social ways within the framework of elderly care are discussed. The empirical part is based on a qualitative study of Shanghai’s retirement/nursing homes along with a survey on attitudes towards elderly care. The study concludes that the location of retirement/nursing homes; subsidies; staffing; and quality of the provided services in general, remain pressing issues. |
