This study begins by first divided Korean culture into three separate backgrounds which help to frame the examination of the subject. These are geographic, socioeconomic as well as faith and belief. Following this, the history of Korean painting will be examined with Tiger paintings as the analytical center. In this section emphasis is placed on folk art of the late Chosen period and how this art displays the intrinsic sentiment of Korea. This uniqueness is located in the humor. The theme of humor ties together the analytical content of the first chapter. Consideration for geographic background informs the naturalism, simplest aesthetic forming a natural and minimalist beauty. These features tie into the work’s free-formed technique and help form the humor conveyed through these works. Consideration for the social economic background draws attention to how the poverty and the presence of a class system created a critical view towards the support of the class hierarchy and gave rise to satire. Through these works humor was selected as a method to express satirize for the class stratum. Lastly, in terms of faith and belief shamanism possessed the most utility as a representative faith. The deities that grew out of this faith tradition provide an additional point that connects to humor. Consequently, in terms of Korea culture humor can be taken to be a key term.
