In recent years, with the increasingly investment in cultural facilities by the government, initiatives for construction of art museums have been launched all over the country. Nonetheless, the rapid development of Chinese contemporary art in; both academy and practice, make itself an important art trend in art museums. However, in contrast to the popular trend of art museum and contemporary art, the public know very little or even misunderstand the contemporary art. Although the art museums have made efforts to narrow the gap, some factor still serve as obstacles: from the popularity and understand of modern art among the public, such as the late start of public education in research and practice by art museums, and the weak foundation of ability to appreciate art by the public.For the above mentioned reasons, the topic of the thesis is how to establish a platform in art museums to promote cognition in contemporary art among the public. In addition, it will serve as an initial reference to art museum education in our country.This thesis consists of five sections. The first section is of introduction, to comb the clue of contemporary art education development in the overseas and domestic art museum. It also states the background of question proposed, concept and present status of the study object, study methodology and significance in the first section. Chapter One is for the theory, where to interpret the connection among art museum, visitor and contemporary art. To be specific, the first point is interpretation of contemporary art’s superiority and difficulty. The second point is of the responsibility of the art museum to interpret contemporary art to the visitor. Last point is about the obstacle among the visitor, art museum and contemporary art. Chapter Two focuses on practice, simultaneously introducing three cases in domestic (i.e. National Art Museum of China. Guangdong Museum of Art, and Ullens Center for Contemporary Art) via cases of two art museums located in Europe and USA, i.e. Tate Modern and MoMA respectively as background. Chapter Three is to analyze and conclude the status of museum contemporary art education in China, as well as put forward further suggestions based on above cases, including the foundation, role, objective and approach of museum contemporary art education. The last section is for the conclusion, to summarize the structure and study achievement of the thesis, analyze the shortage of the study as well as look forward the future.
