China is now enjoying an increasing international influence.Therefore,more and more foreign visitors are eager to learn some traditional Chinese culture.Various kinds of museums are ideal places for them,and high-quality translation is important in delivering the messages about traditional Chinese culture.However,due to the lack of enough knowledge about museum exhibition functions and language features of relative documents of the museums in English-speaking countries,translators may have difficulty in attracting more visitors to museums through their translation.This dissertation analyzes the translation of introductions to folk customs exhibited in Yinzhou intangible heritage museum.It discusses the need for knowing museum exhibition functions and using parallel texts for reference in the translation of museum documents.First,this dissertation introduces the background knowledge and preparations of this translation project.Second,it illustrates museum exhibition functions,analyzes parallel texts,exhibition introductions of Metropolitan Museum of Art and summarizes their similar features.Third,this dissertation uses these features to improve the translation of Yinzhou intangible heritage museum project.It suggests that translators should adopt translation techniques including pre-editing,omission and free translation to enable museums to provide better services to visitors.Furthermore,the way Metropolitan Museum of Art names those exhibitions also lets the translator rethink the translations of the folk customs.It is necessary for translators to provide some background information and make some adjustments to better realize the educational function of museums. |
