| Zhuanli wanxiang mingyi (Mingyi), written by Japanese monk Konghai, is quite important material in the research of Middle-Chinese phonology for its conservation of the original Yupian and tens of thousands of fanqie entries. This dissertation investigates both external and internal properties of phonological system of Mingyi.By collating Mingyi with the remains of Yupian, the first chapter determines the historical period of Mingyi phonological system, which is before Sun Qiang’s revising of original Yupian. The resemblance between Mingyi and the remains of Yupian diversifies a little among different parts of Yupian. Chapter two examines the ways of phonetic notation in Mingyi. By investigating the phenomenon of you-qie-tong-yin (annotating one character by two fanqies meaning one sound), it is proved that most of the fanqies come from one source, which means the unicity of Mingyi phonological system. After thoroughly correcting the fanqie items, we conducted fanqie xi-lian by Excel and VBA programming and laid out the result in the third chapter. In chapter four, several phonological categories are investigated to see whether some similar sound groups were combined or separated, including the labial and dental plosives, the dental nasals, as well as finals like the You-You group, Yan-Fan group and Geng-Qing group. Chapter five focus on the Chongniu phenomenon in Mingyi. The existence of Chongniu contrast is also found in Mingyi phonological system. Further discussion on the properties of both categories of Chongniu shows that the difference between the two categories lies in the medial. At the end of this dissertation, you may find two attachments. The former points out the disparate parts of MingYi and the remains of Yupian, the latter is a list of corrected items of fanqies based on the revised edition of Mingyi by Lv Hao. |
