From1940s to1960s, many people who studied in the U.S from china mainland, Hong Kong and Taiwan did not return when they finished their studies. They chose to stay and work in the United States and then became U.S. citizens. Among these people, there were some historians, such as Yang Lian-sheng, He Bing-di, Huang Ren-yu, Wu Tian-wei, Liu Zi-jian, Tang De-gang, Yu Ying-shi, Xu Zhuo-yun, Zhang Guang-zhi, Zhang Hao, Lin Yu-sheng, Wang Rong-zu, Du Wei-ming and Huang Zong-zhi. After the Second World War, They gradually emerged in the Western historians. Due to the reform and opening up, these Chinese American historians had begun to affect the academic of the China mainland. Huang Ren-yu, Tang De-gang and Yu Ying-shi are the most famous historians. Although previous studies mentioned their academics, they were mostly fragmented and not systematic. So it is difficult to understand their characteristics as a whole. This thesis will study Chinese American historians as a whole that went to America from1940s to1960s, by centered Huang Ren-yu, Tang De-gang and Yu Ying-shi. Besides, the thesis will also further discuss the relation between these historians and the development Of the mainland’s historiography. The thesis consists of three parts:The first part briefly discusses the background of Chinese-American historians of this period have profoundly influenced the mainland’s historiography after reform and opening up. Firstly, traces the development of Chinese historiography in Modern China. And then analyzes the reasons in two aspects. One is historical opportunity, including the mainland’s reform and opening up policy, diversification of historiography; the other hand, Chinese American historians Of this period have their own advantages, such as the special people who have double backgrounds, to make up some of drawbacks of scholars in mainland, and to act as a communicational bridge between Chinese and Western. The second part mainly analyzes these Chinese-American historians’ specific impact on the mainland’s historiography and their defects. First of all, the mainland introduced, published and sold well historians’ books. Moreover, mainland scholars passionately studied these historians and their books. Secondly, they promoted the diversified development Of historical theory and historiography’s methods. Also, they promoted the Popularization of the historiography.1,"Macro-History" of Huang Ren-yu, and "History of the Three Gorges" of Tang De-gang and "Inner ways" of Yu Ying-shi all provided new perspectives to study Chinese history;2, The Chinese-American historians of this period in history studies frequently used western methods, such as psychology history, oral history and other methods to promote the continent’s diversity of historical research methods.3,The historians promoted the Popularization of the historiography. For example, historical narrative of Huang Ren-yu firstly let readers find historical books can be written in a more interesting form. Thirdly, I make a try to think of the limitations of Chinese-American historians, for example they negative Marxist historiography on the mainland overall. The third part Ⅰ make a try to think about how to make better development on the mainland’s historiography from these Chinese-American historians, such as to give more freedom to researchers, to cultivate an integrated team of professionals and to study based on Chinese traditional and international historiography and so on.Chinese historiography will must get further and broad development by communication with international’s. The mainland scholars need to sum up, inherit and develop how to learn better from western historiography, how to better get the excavation of the sprits of the our traditional historiography, how to make contributes to promote our national culture and foster the national spirit and how to make Chinese historiography not only have Chinese characteristics but also belong to the world.
