The Attentive Discussion Of Modern Historiography Trends In USA

The American Historical Association is the largest and most influential professional historical organization in the United States.Since its establishment,there is an important tradition that the president of the association made the presidential addresses at the annual meeting.This paper is based on the 18 pieces of presidential addresses from 2000 to 2017 which is the main research object,supplemented by analysis of more than 100 addresses before this century,in order to explore the contemporary American historiography trend.Through the association’s website resources,combined with the association’s historical archives,this paper sorts out the historical sequence of the association’s academic traditions,describes its history from the association,the publications and the addresses.Studies indicate the association has been a professional history academic exchange platform,the propeller of the construction of the history disciplines and the professional historians and the public voice channel.It also analyses the president of the association from gender,ethnicity,nationality,academic background,research field and coaching experience.On this basis,this paper further probes the tendency of contemporary American historiography from three aspects including that the new field of history research,the new perspectives and methods of history research,the history education and social function.In the new field,a global history focusing on globalization issues and phenomena,a new cultural history represented by memory history and political and cultural history,and a new trend in the development of women’s history were described.In the new perspectives and methods,it analyses that with the global history and micro-historical perspectives and the continuous deepening of the application of digital history,the characteristics of universal relevance,micro-awareness,and quantitative combined with qualitative research are showing.Finally,starting with the function of historical education in the changing American social life,this paper integrated the views of the president on what Americans shape in history education,which answer is to cultivate the American citizens with open global vision,deep local sentiment,civic responsibility and historical-mindedness.These elements are great significance to the present “Americans in the world”.
