Frontier Historiography Of American Historian Walter P.webb

Walter Prescott Webb is a famous historian of the United States.His statement of Frontier Historiography involves frontier historiography,western historiography and environmental historiography etc.,which has been widely recognized in the academic circle academy.However,there are few researches on Webb from the perspective of historiography in China.By using the writings of the historians at that time and research products of present historiography,this paper analyzes the development of traditional U.S.borderland historiography,describes its academic tradition,and states that the Webb Historiography stems from the impacts of excluding the frontier and Turner’s Frontier Hypothesis.Meanwhile,with the logical sequence of Webb’s personal study on history and the change of his living environment,this paper examines the ideological trajectory of Frontier Historiography in locality,region,nation and “world”.In addition,through Webb’s views on history,historiography and historians expressed in his speeches,letters and writings,this paper illustrates the narrative features of Frontier Historiography from his positioning of historians and the specific analysis and application of historical records.Finally,this paper investigates the core of Webb’s statement from the perspective of inheriting the tradition of U.S.frontier historiography,and provides a general review of Frontier Historiography in combination with the comments of U.S.academy.Due to the limitations of time and personal experience,Webb’s historical interpretation of frontier does not truly solve the problems at that time,but his inheritance as well as the critical thinking of historiography have provided an answer and inspired the U.S.academy.
